To the question "What is the Enlightenment?" at the origin of the controversy, the philosophers Immanuel Kant and Moses Mendelssohn each offered an answer in 1784.
Five years before the French Revolution, these two manifestos, respectively entitled: "Answer to the question: what is the Enlightenment?" and "On the question: what does aufklären mean ?", take stock of the Enlightenment.
