Title : Nativities - Michèle Gazier - Book
Summary :
Two women converse, a mother and her daughter. They exchange, as they say, news, a way of letting the banality of everyday life speak for them and of preserving the complicity and tenderness of silence. But in the interplay of these two voices, stories are born, stories of birth, precisely. "We are born," wrote Rousseau, "so to speak, twice; one to exist and the other to live." Jean-Jacques forgot the women who are also born into life by giving existence and the price they pay for this privilege.
Far from the unctuous and glorious natalities of imagery, the stories that intersect here, funny or cruel, pathetic or tender, draw most of their strength from the ability to grasp the ordinary nature of the event, the lived nakedness of this upheaval. We find there, a little, of what is sung elsewhere, the expectation, the wonder, the sharing; but also and always what we are accustomed to keeping quiet, the anguish, the humiliation and this terrible solitude in the face of what is sometimes called being born and sometimes also dying.
