Every two or three years I pour the contents of the accumulated files onto the large table: journal pages, travel journals, portraits, nascent poems, unpublished texts, edited articles, notes and jot-downs, clippings, etc. I sort, I sniff, I smell, I cut, I eliminate, throw into the fire. This time, I pinned down a few ideas caught on the fly, eight or ten memories worth remembering, and a few sketches I want to finish. I still kept a few hypotheses about the world as it is not, a few observations about my cat who goes where he wants, a few reading notes on books I love and would like others to love, the smells of the forest in autumn, dives into my inner space, and a few passages on the agitated surface of this planet. I sprinkled the whole thing with a few white pebbles taken from my notebooks, those minimals that I would find pretentious to call maxims.
