Title: The Shipwrecks of Tromelin Island - Irene Frain - book

Summary :

In 1761, a French ship ran aground on a remote islet in the Indian Ocean. It was carrying 160 slaves. To survive, white and black survivors had to live together. An officer wanted to build a rowboat. The sailors refused to help him. The slaves accepted. Their dignity commanded the respect of the whites. But when it was time to leave, they were not taken on board. Fifteen years later, when word of this crime had spread to all the ports, they were returned for. Only seven women and one child remained. Using maritime archives, archaeological excavations, and a stay on the island, Irène Frain recounts this little-known chapter in human rights, which led to the abolition of slavery.
