Title: The People of Combeval - Volume 2 The Sovereign in Her Domain - Jean Paul Malaval - book
Summary :
Despite the trauma of the Great War, field work continued on the lands of Combeval, in Corrèze, in 1919. Aging, Charles Montagnac had to give up handing over the reins of the family farm to his eldest son, Marcelin, who had returned maimed from the front, to rely on his younger brother, Bastien. Impetuous, the young man nevertheless proved resistant to paternal guardianship.
Charles places all his hopes in Reine, the wife he has chosen for Marcelin, the only one capable, in his eyes, of ensuring the future of the estate. Reine would do better to assert her rights if she could provide Combeval with an heir, but Marcelin's injury has rendered him powerless.
When Bastien forces his fiancée, Alexandrine, into the Montagnac household, the patriarch's plans seem doomed. Except Reine isn't willing to sacrifice her lifelong ambition...
As a passionate observer of the changes in rural France, Jean-Paul Malaval depicts in this magnificent saga of the land the exemplary destiny, between heartbreak and rebirth, of a French family in the aftermath of the Great War.
