Attorney Mickey Haller is at rock bottom. He failed the district attorney election, his ex has moved away from him, and his daughter won't speak to him except to criticize him. One day, he receives a text from his assistant: Call me - 187. 187 being code for "murder," Haller knows he'll have to remobilize to defend the accused. But the victim, Gloria Dayton, is a prostitute Mickey loved dearly and thought he'd helped get back on the straight and narrow. Discovering that she'd duped him into continuing to prostitute herself and imagining that he might have put her in danger quickly puts him under pressure. Not to mention that some so-called law enforcement officials don't appreciate Haller meddling in their affairs.
Haller is a hero who doubts, an honest man almost swallowed up by darkness. Everything is in these temptations, this fragmentation, these hesitations, and it's fascinating. François Forestier, L'Obs.
