Title : The House of Return - Jean-Paul Kauffmann - book
Summary :
Upon returning from three years of captivity in Lebanon, in a trance-like state, the narrator discovers Les Tilleuls, a house lost in the heart of the Landes forest. He decides to buy this property to dispel the memory of his imprisonment. A strange bond of dependence will be created with this residence, which symbolizes the return to the world of the living. In a total, almost pagan fusion with the nature of which he has been so deprived, the narrator camps out amidst the work. He delights in this transitional atmosphere specific to convalescence, this in-between that confusingly separates the end of the ordeal from the return to humankind. A series of unequally picturesque characters parades past: two taciturn and enigmatic workers, the indefinable real estate agent, an architect always in a hurry... Will this house be the place of resurrection? Twenty years later, Jean-Paul Kauffmann evokes his captivity. Allusively. With elegance, he has chosen to avoid being serious for the most part. Never complacent or victim-like, it is on the contrary a jubilant testimony to the joy of being alive, to the refusal of fatality which resists all trials.
