Title : The Westernization of the World - Serge Latouche - book
Summary :
At the end of a complex multi-century history, the West has transformed itself into an uncontrollable "social machine," certain of being universal because it is reproducible. Unlimited growth of goods, multiplication of communication networks, intensive urbanization, continual technical changes, breakdown of the basic family, emancipation of women, welfare state, forced schooling, parliamentary democracy: the Western model is convinced of being the best. It plays on the fascination it exerts on elites and peoples to export itself to the South and the East. The universalization of the model, however, encounters resistance and obstacles of all kinds. Its very triumph engenders ferments of decomposition that give rise to possible alternatives, which the author attempts to explore in this book.
