Title : The Man from the Lake - Arnaldur Indridason - Book
Summary :
Following the earthquakes that struck Iceland in June 2000, Lake Kleifarvatn gradually emptied. A geologist tasked with measuring the water level discovered a skeleton on the dried-up bottom, weighted down by a radio transmitter bearing half-erased Cyrillic inscriptions.
The police are dispatched to the scene, and Erlendur and his team are put in charge of the investigation, which leads them to focus on the unsolved disappearances that took place during the 1960s in Iceland. The investigations soon turn to the embassies or delegations of the countries of the former communist bloc. The three police officers are led to meet former Icelandic students who had received scholarships from East Germany in the 1950s and who all reported the painful experience of a system that, to keep the people happy, deemed it necessary to constantly monitor them. Little by little, Erlendur, Elinborg, and Sigurdur Oli follow the trail of the man in the lake, whose terrible secret they will eventually discover.
