Taken in by fishermen and raised in a monastery, at seventeen he sets out in search of his parents and arrives at the gates of a kingdom ruled by a queen. After defeating an "impudent and hairy fop" who was waging a "love war" against the sovereign, Gregory marries the latter, who is none other than his mother. The secret discovered, he leaves his kingdom and is chained to a bare rock, with no food other than the juice of the stone. After seventeen years, he resembles a porcupine, covered in lichen. It is in this state that the messengers from Rome find him, who travel the world in search of the new pope, designated by the Lamb of God.
