Title: The School for Wives - Molière - book
Summary :
Arnolphe, a disillusioned old man, educates Agnès away from all knowledge. He sees in his ward's ingenuousness the guarantee of a virtue he sees in no other: if he marries her, he will not be cuckolded. It is therefore with complete candor that Agnès abandons herself to the caresses of the first suitor who passes under her balcony. Arnolphe must demonstrate all his cunning to try to ward off the suitor. A satire on the pretensions of the stronger sex, The School for Wives illustrates the derisory reality of a ridiculous despot and the slow emancipation of a woman. More contemporary than ever, Molière denounces the misogyny at the foundation of social relations.
