Title : L'Assommoir - Émile Zola - book
Summary :
Edition presented and commented by Gérard Gengembre, professor of French literature at the University of Caen.
A battered child, lame from birth and yet so pretty, pregnant at 14 and thrown onto the streets by her lover Lantier, Gervaise marries Coupeau, the zinc worker who soon has an accident and sinks into drunkenness, dragging her into alcoholic decline. The once cheerful young girl becomes a tramp among this suburban people teeming with misfortune who destroy themselves to forget their misery. Possessed to the point of madness and death, painted by Zola with infinite human pity, the couple abandons themselves to the poison of "this slow and stubborn source which floods the immense hole of Paris."
In 1877, Zola wrote L'Assommoir au vitriol, as the brandy that ravaged the working classes was called at the time in the Goutte d'Or district.
