Title : Immensities - Sylvie Germain - book
Summary :
Around Prokop Poupa, a literature professor reduced to a street sweeper in Prague, move a few men and women marginalized by dissidence. Each, in derision, imagines that a god Lare watches over him. One places him in his kitchen, another on the balcony, in the attic, or in the cellar; Prokop, for his part, places his god Lare in the toilets, which become a mecca for reading, meditation, and doubt. Then comes the revolution. Some of his friends find a place, even importance, in the new society; for others, it is too late. Prokop, for his part, drifts beyond this divide between the old and the new, wandering alone in the immensity of dreams, human madness, and the silence of God, to the point of sometimes running aground in hallucinatory reveries about the pain of those who have been deprived of the happiness of loving, and even more so about the misfortune of those who have been traitors to love. Still wandering the streets of his city, between emptiness and hope, Prokop no longer knows anything except that he is nothing, and this observation is consent; he "offers this nothing into the darkness", at the bottom of which perhaps lies the unexpected.
