Title : Out of the Shelter - David Lodge - book
Summary :
Out of the Shelter is the most autobiographical of David Lodge's novels. The London Blitz in 1940, the evacuation to the countryside, then the years of austerity in a London suburb and the Catholic school. But David Lodge is not working as a historian; he recounts with his usual verve and humor the adventures of sixteen-year-old Timothy - his double - during the summer holidays of 1951, at his sister's house who is working for the American army in Heidelberg. In this environment, he discovers life, partying, the first games of seduction. His encounters will be for him the rite of passage between childhood and adult life. Out of the Shelter is both a coming-of-age novel and an international novel. James Joyce's Dedalus and Henry James's The Ambassadors are the obvious literary models.
