Title : History of the Chevalier des Grieux and Manon Lescaut - Abbé Prévost - book

  • Summary

At the age of seventeen, he was about to leave Amiens, where he was completing his philosophy studies. Des Grieux saw the Arras coach arrive. A young girl got off, so charming that he approached her to question her: her parents were sending her to become a nun, and she knew she would be unhappy. Determined to free her from the tyranny of her parents, he put her up in an inn whose owner was devoted to him, and the next day, at daybreak, the two of them left for Paris.
When it tragically ended, des Grieux recounted his tumultuous affair with Manon to the Marquis de Renoncour, who reported it in his Memoirs that Prévost published in May 1731. It is thus the very voice of the knight that we hear, it is the emotion that he feels in recounting and reliving what he has experienced that touches us - and his words sound so true that we could believe that Manon and des Grieux had really existed, or that Abbé Prévost was transposing a moment from his own life. But the poignant realism of this tale filled with suffering, of this story where pleasure is lived, bought, and leads to death, is only due to the dazzling art of the author.

Professor Emeritus at the University of Tours and former member of the University Institute of France, Jean Goulemot recently published Adieu les philosophes. Que reste-t-il des Lumières? (Seuil, 2001). He also provided Livre de Poche with an edition of Diderot's Paradox on the Actor and Rousseau's La Nouvelle Héloïse.
