Title : And I still live - Jean d'Ormesson - book
Summary :
There is only one novel - and we are both its authors and its characters: History. Everything else is imitation, copy, scattered fragments, stammerings. It is History that this world-novel revisits, where, sometimes man, sometimes woman, the narrator flies from era to era and resurrects before our eyes the adventures of men and their great discoveries. Living by gathering and hunting in a still virgin nature, he arrives, after millennia of walking, on the banks of the Nile where agriculture and writing develop. By turns African, Sumerian, Trojan, friend of Achilles and Ulysses, Roman citizen, wandering Jew, he salutes the invention of printing, the discovery of the New World, the Revolution of 1789, the progress of science. Sailor, servant in a tavern on the Sainte-Geneviève mountain, valet of a great painter or an astronomer, mistress of an emperor, he is at home in Jerusalem, in Byzantium, in Venice, in New York. This vast enterprise of exploration and admiration ends up sketching in hollow, with irony and gaiety, a sort of intellectual autobiography of the author.
