A young, pregnant, Black woman, completely destitute, who says her name is Destiny. The other, Anne, soon to be a grandmother, white, educated middle class. By chance, a fragile and chaotic relationship begins between these two.
The young Nigerian woman fled her country, crossed deserts and seas, and endured the terrifying threat of predators of all kinds. Anne confronts the violence of this past, loses herself in misunderstandings, and sometimes wavers. Destiny strikes her as a powerful—and disturbing—woman. "I have a destiny," the young woman repeats, even in the depths of her misery. Destiny doesn't tell the whole story. But, through the shadows, Anne gradually sees a magnificent figure emerge, that of a heroine of our time.
