In September 1909, Freud delivered five lectures in the United States to a non-specialist audience, in which he not only gave a simple and lively account of the origins of psychoanalysis, invented by the hysteric Anna O., but also an introduction to the main themes of this science: the interpretation of dreams, the Oedipus complex, infantile sexuality, the nature of neuroses and the reasons why some people take refuge in illness. These "Five Lectures on Psychoanalysis" were followed by a "Contribution to the History of the Psychoanalytic Movement", in which Freud retraces the difficult beginnings of psychoanalysis and the resistance it had to overcome.
