1864. Mexican-Irish rancher Alvarez Kelly is tasked with delivering a herd of 2,500 head to the Union army, but the Southerners, who are also short of supplies, are determined to seize the herd. Thanks to Charity Warwick, a beautiful Southern woman, Kelly falls into a trap and finds himself prisoner of Colonel Rossiter. The latter advises him to switch sides and steal the herd for the Southerners. Kelly is reluctant, so Rossiter promises to break one of his fingers for every day he is late. Kelly is therefore forced to accept.
