Title : Leonardo's Judas - Leo Perutz - book
Summary :
It only took a moment. Who could the great Leonardo da Vinci possibly draw inspiration from to portray Judas in his life's greatest work, The Last Supper? On reflection, a scoundrel from Milan's underworld should do the trick! After wandering the city's taverns, one thing became clear to him: Jesus had absolved these poor wretches, but he forgave Judas nothing. What if, rather than a lost sheep, Leonardo looked to the "honest people"? A colorful novel and one of the most devious imagined by Leo Perutz.

Title : The Wind Horse - Patrick Segal - book
Summary : The Himalayas are the expedition to Ama Dablam, in 1979, by the Briançon guides, in which P. Segal participated in order to test a rescue boat. In fact, it is above all, for him, a mystical experience, a way to reach an inner summit, symbolized by the wind horse. The wind horse is a prayer flag that flies at the entrance to Himalayan villages. But it is also, for the author, the horse of escape, the one that allows one to go further, to cross the Mountain. It will take us to Thailand, in 1981, where Patrick Segal strives to free from prison a young disabled man accused of heroin trafficking. There, we find the author's incessant fight against all the prisons where man is locked up. This search for somewhere else, for a world where one can breathe better, where one gets drunk on beauty (as on Ama Dablam) is the foundation of the story. But let's not be mistaken: this Wind Horse is not a spiritual essay, it is a book of action, a book of adventures.

Title : Paper Lives - Rabih Alameddine - book
Summary :
Femina Prize - Foreign Novel 2016
A dazzling novel of playful erudition, celebrating the beauty and distress of Beirut, Paper Lives is a true declaration of love to literature.
Winner of the 2016 Prix Femina étranger Aaliya Saleh, 72, with blue hair, has always rejected the constraints imposed by Lebanese society. In the shadow of the ancient walls of her apartment, she prepares for her favorite ritual. Every year on January 1st, after lighting two candles for Walter Benjamin, this irreverent and slightly obsessive woman begins translating into Arabic one of the works of her favorite novelists: Kafka, Pessoa, or Nabokov. Both a refuge and a "blind pleasure," literature is the air she breathes, the air that makes her vibrate like this Chopin opus that she never stops listening to. It is surrounded by books, boxes filled with papers, and loose sheets of her translations that Aaliya feels alive. Walking the streets, Aaliya remembers the smell of her bookstore, conversations with her friend Hannah, reading by candlelight while the war raged, the city on fire, the unpredictability of Beirut. A dazzling novel of playful erudition, celebrating the beauty and distress of Beirut, Paper Lives is a true declaration of love to literature. "Playful, intelligent and full of enthusiasm, Paper Lives is the cure for tasteless literature." Newsday "Sublime writing... sharp, intelligent, often sardonic... a tribute to literature." The National "One of the most beautiful and original female characters of recent years." Mathias Enard, Goncourt Prize 2015 Finalist for the 2014 National Book Award and the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award, and winner of the 2015 California Book Award

Title : The Crime of the Marots - Xavier-Laurent Petit - book
Summary : The man with the blown-out head was a very young guy, a kid between fourteen and sixteen, European in appearance, dark-skinned. He must have been six feet four inches tall when he had his head. The shot that killed him came from a large-caliber weapon. Pending the ballistics examination, the report was limited to speculation. Probably a Smith & Wesson or a Remington. Common weapons for hunting wild boar and deer, caliber 280 or 300. Death was immediate. The incident must have occurred on Friday, October 22, between 10:30 p.m. and midnight.
A young teenager has been killed, another disappears, in the same place, at the same time. Identifying the victim is impossible. Parents, police officers, and gendarmes will mistake his name, much to the reader's delight. As for the murderer, who could not have foreseen the simultaneity of these two events, he can only rejoice: the crime has become almost perfect. After working as a teacher and school principal, Xavier-Laurent Petit has devoted himself for several years to his children's education and to writing. Le Crime des Marots is his first novel. He has published two critically acclaimed collections of short stories.

Who knows, perhaps this journey of no return will reconcile him with his destiny.
English novelist (1909-1957), Malcolm Lowry is the author of the masterpiece Under the Volcano, partly autobiographical, and novels and poems.
“Everything is burning hot in this exciting new release.” The Point

Title : Orphan Train - Christina Baker Kline - book Summary :
From Ireland in the 1920s to Maine in the 2000s, via the plains of the Midwest ravaged by the Great Depression, this is a broad, luminous novel, in which the voices of two orphans intertwine to paint a little-known episode in American history. Between 1854 and 1929, trains crisscrossed the Midwestern plains carrying hundreds of orphans. At the end of the journey, some were welcomed into loving families, but many others were forced into a life of toil or servitude. Vivian Daly was only nine years old when she was put on one of those trains. She now lives out her golden years in a quiet Maine town, her dark past relegated to large trunks in the attic. That is, until seventeen-year-old Mollie arrives, ordered by the judge to clean out Mrs. Daly's attic as community service. And against all odds, an unlikely friendship develops between the rebellious teenager and the old lady. Deep down, these two have much more in common than meets the eye, starting with a devastated childhood...

Title : The Insoumise - Martine Desevre - book
Summary : In France, during the reign of Francis I, Raphaëlle Aslet, an orphan violently dispossessed of her possessions, is initiated at a very young age into the art of goldsmithing. At eighteen, she excels in creating highly original jewels. Determined to make a living from her art, she goes to Paris to practice her talents. But she must immediately confront misogyny and rejection from a guild whose art is exclusively practiced by men. Nevertheless, managing to get noticed by the king, Raphaëlle attempts to establish herself among her colleagues. A passionate love unites her with the knight Guillaume de Valras, unfortunately married. But ambitions, rivalries, and desires for revenge tear them apart and separate them as the goldsmiths seek to oust her by the most vile means. Added to this malevolence is the destructive jealousy of Margaux, Guillaume's wife, and the awakening of a terrible past that reveals Raphaëlle's true identity. A gripping story, full of love and drama in the glittering atmosphere of the Renaissance, among the brilliance of precious stones, the shaping of gold, and the artistic abundance of the Pont-au-Change, the luxuriant center of Parisian goldsmithing.

Title : When You Weren't There - Laura Bloom - book
Summary : Summer Hill, a suburb of Sydney, in the 1940s.
For the women who remained at home, the war was also a trial. With no news of her husband, who was mobilized in the Pacific, Catherine was convinced he was dead. Unable to bear the solitude any longer, she finally found comfort with an American soldier. But in February 1946, her husband returned. Haunted by the memory of the fighting, he was no longer the same man. Catherine, for her part, was consumed by guilt. For adultery was not the only one of his secrets. With this remarkable novel of psychological accuracy, Laura Bloom subtly evokes the intimate dramas caused by war and offers a magnificent portrait of a woman who takes responsibility for her choices against all odds.

Title : Plea for a few obscure Jews, victims of Monsieur Papon - Preface by Pierre Vidal-Naquet - Gérard Boulanger - book
Please note that some pages may have been highlighted with highlighter or pencil, but this will not interfere with reading.
Summary :
On April 2, 1998, the verdict of one of the most important French trials of the 20th century was delivered: Maurice Papon was sentenced by the Bordeaux Assize Court to ten years of criminal imprisonment for complicity in crimes against humanity. Secretary General of the Bordeaux Prefecture from 1942 to 1944, he had contributed to the deportation of 1,600 Jewish men, women, and children. A month earlier, on March 9, 1998, Mr. Gérard Boulanger began the pleadings as representative of the first individual plaintiffs and the majority of the civil parties. This Bordeaux lawyer had been actively fighting for this trial to take place since December 8, 1981. It took seventeen years of a twisty investigation for him to finally be able to plead. This book is a faithful transcription of his plea. Gérard Boulanger gives the history of this seventeen-year investigation, of the fierce battle of the civil parties to ensure that the trial took place despite attempts at destabilization. Then he describes the role played by Maurice Papon during the Collaboration. Arriving in Bordeaux in 1942, he was given responsibility for "Jewish questions" and, de facto , significant police powers that would lead to requisitions and several roundups, starting with that of the night of July 15-16, 1942, then to the establishment of a formidable file of Jews. From 1944, Papon tried to cover his tracks, but Gérard Boulanger shattered the pseudo-resistance of the senior official. This book, illustrated throughout with courtroom drawings by Edith Gorren, is an indispensable document that contributes to the national duty of remembrance, an essential text for generations who did not experience the war. It is a plea against forgetting and for the truth to come out: Papon was not a cog in the Vichy bureaucratic machine, but rather an active and merciless executor of its policy of collaboration.

Title : The Wind of the City - Roucarie Philippe - book
Summary : They lived in a world that was closing in on their horizon. They were neither better nor worse. They were simply the heirs of a tradition that bristled at the unknown. In the country, everything was bitter and nothing was generously offered. They were peasants, born of the land, nourished harshly by it, and so viscerally attached to this origin that any intrusion was a frustration for them. So, a newcomer, even one "entered as a son-in-law" and helped by a respected and esteemed Grandmother, seemed to them as undesirable as rain on haymaking day. Only his wife, born in the country, raised among everyone and as such entitled to indulgence, could have him admitted after infinite patience.

Title : Little Girls - Elizabeth Bowen - book
Summary : Three former classmates reunite after losing touch some fifty years earlier. They parted lightly the summer of their tenth birthday, vowing to achieve the moon and stars in the face of life's promise. Half a century later, everything points to their having "made it." Dicey, a widow and seemingly fulfilled mother, has become a strange, undignified old lady, haunted by the passage of time. Sheikie is a university professor. Mumbo runs a chain of stores. But, looking back and rediscovering the lack of complacency that is characteristic of children, they realize that they have indeed failed in life... Do we ever leave childhood? And if we think we will one day leave it, is it to go somewhere? Elizabeth Bowen, undoubtedly in her century the surest heir to Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf, raises these questions... and of course takes care not to answer them, because our certainties are the greatest enemies of our emotions.
