The man with the blown-out head was a very young guy, a kid between fourteen and sixteen, European in appearance, dark-skinned. He must have been six feet four inches tall when he had his head. The shot that killed him came from a large-caliber weapon. Pending the ballistics examination, the report was limited to speculation. Probably a Smith & Wesson or a Remington. Common weapons for hunting wild boar and deer, caliber 280 or 300. Death was immediate. The incident must have occurred on Friday, October 22, between 10:30 p.m. and midnight.

A young teenager has been killed, another disappears, in the same place, at the same time. Identifying the victim is impossible. Parents, police officers, and gendarmes will mistake his name, much to the reader's delight. As for the murderer, who could not have foreseen the simultaneity of these two events, he can only rejoice: the crime has become almost perfect.

After working as a teacher and school principal, Xavier-Laurent Petit has devoted himself for several years to his children's education and to writing. Le Crime des Marots is his first novel. He has published two critically acclaimed collections of short stories.
