Title : The Roads Traveled - Edith Wharton - book Summary : Her sharp and - even more so than that of her dear Henry James - critical eye on her country and her compatriots earned Edith Wharton the admiration of the severe Edmund Wilson. In this self-portrait, in which the author of The Wedding Planner and The New Yorkers casts, at the end of his life, "a look back on the paths traveled", we find the woman James had christened "the angel of devastation", her ferocious art dressed in chic, this impression of strength and mixed reflections which has struck all readers of her work. Here is a great "portrait of a woman," that of one of the great ladies of American literature, in whom irony and humor have always been able to combine with panache and elegance.9782253155225 EAN : 9782264031891 Used book Book in good condition The book matches the photo

Title : The Horla and other fantastic tales - Guy de Maupassant - book Summary This volume of fantastic stories, most of which were written between 1882 and 1887, was not composed by Maupassant himself. Reading them in sequence, collected in the order of their publication, one will better understand, however, that the fantastic is a constant in the work - and one that appeared very early on: contrary to what a certain legend has led people to believe, Maupassant, although madness overcame him at the end of his life, did not write from his own dictation. But is it really fantasy? Nothing supernatural here, nor marvelous. But stories that give way to anguish and cruelty, madness and fear, to the division of being that is analyzed with lucidity. The genius of the author is then to make his reader captive, to act on his conscience and to make him believe naturally and simply that this interior fantasy, coherent and logical, is also ordinary life, but suddenly become strange. Title : Sentimental Education - Flaubert Gustave - book Summary Sentimental Education, The Story of a Young Man is a novel written by Gustave Flaubert and published in 1869. The heart of the story is taken from Sainte-Beuve's novel: Volupté, which Honoré de Balzac had already treated and in a way rewritten with The Lily of the Valley. Flaubert's novel takes up the same subject according to entirely new narrative rules, reinventing the coming-of-age novel to give it a depth and acuity never before achieved. Sentimental Education includes many autobiographical elements, such as the meeting of Madame Arnoux, inspired by Flaubert's meeting with Élisa Schlésinger, the love of his life. The main character is Frédéric Moreau, a young provincial of eighteen who comes to study in Paris. From 1840 to 1867, he experienced unwavering friendship and the power of stupidity, art, politics, and the revolutions of a world hesitating between monarchy, republic, and empire. Several women (Rosanette, Madame Dambreuse) crossed his life, but none could compare to Marie Arnoux, wife of a wealthy art dealer, with whom he was madly in love. It was through contact with this inactive passion and the contingencies of the world that he received his sentimental education, which essentially boiled down to gradually burning his illusions. Less well-known than Madame Bovary, Sentimental Education is, however, a complete novel with a fully mastered style, and where the meticulously constructed world is one he knew from experience. The fresco thus created is both a summary of Romanticism and a precise picture of an era, making Flaubert the spiritual initiator of naturalism. Maupassant and Émile Zola would consider him their master. EAN : 9782743400392 Used book Book in good condition The book matches the photo

Title : Disincarnation - Jean Rouaud - book Summary "At that precise moment, literature was hanging by a thread. Two friends advised a third, who had just read them a long melody into which he had put the best of himself, to give it up altogether. No big deal, we'll say. Literature will recover. Yes, but not like before. Literature's survival here, in Croisset, near Rouen, requires renunciation. For young Gustave, the good-for-nothing son of Doctor Flaubert, until then had a different idea of it. For many months, in his Temptation of Saint Anthony, he had indulged in "desperate style" that he would never recover. To cure his "cancer of lyricism," Maxime Du Camp and Louis Bouilhet, the two friends, prescribed him a drastic treatment: write a novel "à la Balzac," "down to earth." It would be, by force and duress, Madame Bovary. The times ahead were not easy. for those who favor the phrase and the song. From now on, realism imposes its iron law, the visions are sent back to the desert and the dead are asked not to be resurrected. As if this fission between earth and heaven referred to another secret war, unleashed several centuries ago around this question of the dual nature. The meeting at Croisset, the ultimate avatar of the Council of Nicaea? Jean Rouaud. EAN : 9782070425457 Used book Book in good condition The book matches the photo

Title : Sentimental Education - Gustave Flaubert - book Summary A young eighteen-year-old provincial, full of dreams and rather attractive, comes to study in Paris. From 1840 to the evening of the coup d'état of 1851, he learns about the world in a society in full upheaval. Along the way, he encounters true love and the contingencies of pleasure, the Revolution and its false apostles, art, the power of money and stupidity, the reversibility of beliefs, fraternal friendship and the inevitability of betrayals, without managing to commit himself to any cause other than that of following the loss of his illusions. Written in dazzling language and according to unprecedented narrative rules, L'Education sentimentale , published in 1869, is perhaps Flaubert's most accomplished and mysterious masterpiece. In seeking to represent the very essence of lived time, the author conveys to us a philosophy of history, a morality of existence and an aesthetic of memory that remain surprisingly relevant for elucidating the enigmas of today. Title : The Barber of Seville - Beaumarchais - book Summary "An old man in love claims to marry his ward tomorrow; a more skillful young lover anticipates him, and that very day makes her his wife, under the nose and in the house of the guardian. This is the basis, from which one could have made, with equal success, a tragedy, a comedy, a drama, an opera, et cetera ." This is how Beaumarchais himself presented The Barber of Seville , which in 1775 quickly triumphed and then enjoyed lasting success: Marie-Antoinette herself played the role of Rosina in 1785; two opera librettos were taken from it for Paesiello and Rossini. This is because verbal fantasy and dramatic power offer the spectator a play whose action remains suspended on a fragile link - a word or a silence that can end everything or cause everything to fail - and this is the model for comedy in the two centuries to come. Title : Thérèse Raquin - Emile Zola - book Summary I wanted to study temperaments and not characters. I chose characters supremely dominated by their nerves and their blood, devoid of free will, driven to every act of their life by the fatalities of their flesh: Thérèse and Laurent are human brutes, nothing more. [...] In a word, I had only one desire: given a powerful man and an unfulfilled woman, to seek the beast in them, to see only the beast, to throw them into a violent drama, and to scrupulously note the sensations and actions of these beings. I simply did on two living bodies the analytical work that surgeons do on cadavers. Zola, Preface to the 2nd edition of Thérèse Raquin. What dazzles us today in Thérèse Raquin is Zola the poet and visionary, director of reality and painter of the souls of the night. [...] What force in the description of these beings walled up within themselves, defeated by obscure powers they cannot name, already ransomed by the death that awaits them! And what brilliant dramatic invention throughout this descent into hell, breathless, convulsive, wild!
