Title : Swann's Way - Marcel Proust - book Summary : The Narrator remembers the child he once was. The wait for his mother's goodnight kiss, Sunday lunches at Aunt Léonie's, his grandmother's gifts. He is fascinated by Mr. Swann, a friend of his parents, madly in love with a woman who loves everyone except him. He falls in love with her daughter, Gilberte, who will not make him any happier. Through these scenes of life—intimate or mundane, tragic or comic—pass impressions, scents, visions. Water lilies on the surface of a river, a madeleine forgotten in a cup of tea, catleyas in the hair of a beloved woman, an agate marble offered as a token of friendship... But, once an adult, how can one remain that child filled with wonder in a world one no longer recognizes, where love is suffering, where desire is jealousy, where "the memory of a certain image is only the regret of a certain moment"? Reminiscences of lost childhood, a novel of impossible love, a satire of high society imprisoned in the ephemeral nature of fashion, but also a philosophical study on involuntary memory: Swann's Way is all of these things at once. What is a masterpiece? A palace of memory, with a thousand entrances, where each reader experiences a singular emotion, always renewed. Title : The Last Day of a Condemned Man, preceded by Bug-Jargal - Victor Hugo, Roger Borderie - book Summary : "Suddenly, one of the servants took off my jacket, and the other took my two dangling hands, brought them behind my back, and I felt the knots of a rope slowly winding around my close wrists. At the same time, the other was untying my tie. My cambric shirt, the only shred left of my former self, made him hesitate for a moment; then he began to cut the collar. At this horrible precaution, at the grip of the steel touching my neck, my elbows trembled, and I let out a stifled roar. The executioner's hand trembled. "Sir," he said to me, "pardon me! Did I hurt you? These executioners are very gentle men." EAN : 9782070369195 Used book Book in good condition The book matches the photo

Title : The Punishments - Victor Hugo - book Summary : History does not move backward. A bourgeois empire is not founded on the ruins of a republic. For having proclaimed this, Victor Hugo was exiled by the man he called Napoleon the Little, a caricature of the other, the one from Austerlitz. The Republic, he believed, was moral progress, individual virtue, legitimacy, the people justly represented. "Ten million, one hundred million votes voting en masse do not count before this atom, before this particle of God, the soul of the just." Victor Hugo would be the just man who stood up to Prince Louis-Napoleon's coup d'état. "Sound, sound always, trumpets of thought." They still resonate in these grandiose and passionate verses, full of a dream of justice and equality. EAN : 9782253016861 Used book Book in good condition The book matches the photo

Title : Carmen and Thirteen Other Stories - Prosper Mérimée - book Summary : Carmen, a gypsy, a girl of no means... What does she possess but her name? For many, that's already too much. Hoping to seize the six letters of this first name, Don José abandons his career. She will shamelessly use the passion she inspires to unleash the brutality that lies dormant within Don José. The simplicity of her attire conceals the soul of a queen: lacking a throne, she will exercise a loving tyranny that spares nothing for her slaves. In collusion with death, Carmen will accomplish her work at the risk of paying the price herself. Carmen: beneath these two syllables, traced by Mérimée, sung in Bizet's opera, a world of images and melodies surfaces, which resonate in the thirteen other stories in this collection. Surly hidalgos and bullfighting scenes in Spain, ancient ghosts in Rome... In the heat of the South, the same sun broods over the marriage of madness and grace. Title : The Heart-Ripper - Boris Vian - book Summary : Here's a corner of the countryside where people have strange ways... The old people's fair, for example. A curious institution! We also know that all children can fly like birds as soon as they stretch out their arms - but is that a sufficient reason to lock them up behind ever higher, ever more closed walls? The psychiatrist Jacquemort wonders - then no longer wonders, because he has too much to do with the shame of others, which flows into a very dirty stream. But we, who remain on the shore, see that Boris Vian is simply describing our world. By taking each of our usual words literally, he reveals to us the monstrous country that surrounds us, that of our most implacable desires, where every love hides a hatred, where men dream of ships, and women of walls. Title : Works - Georges Navel - book Summary : One of the most beautiful books inspired by the working class, Travaux, published just after the war in 1945, immediately became a classic. Critics have compared Georges Navel to Gorky, Panaït Istrati, Eugène Dabit, and Charles-Louis Philippe. But Navel makes a voice heard that is uniquely his. As Jean Giono wrote: "This patient search for happiness that is ours, we see it expressed here with quiet good faith." EAN : 9782070371563 Used book Book in good condition The book matches the photo

Title : The Condottiere's Journey - Towards Venice, Fiorenza, Beloved Siena - André Suarès - book Summary : Although he summons the tutelary shadow of Stendhal, the Condottiere has shed all authority. His journey is unique in that it treats cities as characters: Rimini is "gloomy like a successful assassination attempt," Genoa is banal "like the thoughts of an American shopkeeper." Each city not only has its painting, its musical piece, its church, its great man, it also has its own face, its warts, its wrinkles, its bad breath, its smile (the ardent Siena is a "kiss in a mystical smile"). Each corner visited gives birth to a prose poem, where sometimes the vision of a couple united in beatitude emerges. Clare, the patrician of Assisi, seeing Saint Francis booed, reviled, wants no other fiancé than this "mad Little Poor." Catherine of Siena consoles a man condemned to death, promises him eternal marriage, leads him to the scaffold and receives his head in her hands. Title : Carrot Top - Jules Renard - book Summary : Poil de carotte is a long autobiographical short story or novel by Jules Renard published in 1894, which recounts the childhood and misfortunes of an unloved red-haired boy. It is undoubtedly in an unhappy childhood that we must seek the sources of the skepticism and irony of Jules Renard (1864-1910). His art of understatement, his dense and precise style, his cruel observation, the economy of words with which he renders the strongest emotions make him a great classic writer. Poil de carotte, his masterpiece, remains, through its writing and its subject, a surprisingly contemporary book, one of those which, according to Jean-Paul Sartre, "is at the origin of contemporary literature." Title : The Bourgeois Gentleman - Jean-Baptiste Molière - book Summary : Monsieur Jourdain, a bourgeois who seeks to become a gentleman, ultimately finds himself crowned "mamamouchi" during a burlesque and delirious ballet. A satire of a coarse bourgeoisie and the vanity of its dreams of social advancement? Certainly, but also and above all a profound and poetic meditation on the power of the imagination. With this total spectacle that is the comedy-ballet, Le Bourgeois gentilhomme appears as the most fascinating expression of Molière's dramatic genius and the irresistible power of theater. Title : New Yorkers - Edith Wharton - book Summary : Pauline Manford is a seemingly exemplary wife, mother, and homemaker, determined to see only success and harmony around her. But in the New York of the Roaring Twenties, the opulent Manford family is caught up in the whirlwind of pleasure and money. The conflict between a tenacious puritanism and cynical behavior causes dramas from which Pauline turns away by pursuing frenetic activity. Her days are filled with domestic rituals, marital tactics, spiritualist meditations, social gatherings, and charitable organizations in a total leveling of values. She stuns herself with positive principles, as categorical as they are artificial, in order to distract herself from a reality she would find wrong to face. Yet those close to her are painfully aware of the blindness, lies, and betrayals surrounding her. The intimate wounds of her daughter Nona are those of an entire generation victimized by the negligence of their elders. A strikingly timely satire on the ravages of complacency, Women of New York is Edith Wharton's fiercest, funniest, and most modern novel. Title : Émile or On Education, Books I-II - Jean-Jacques Rousseau - book Summary : Today we see Émile as a revolutionary anticipation of new methods in education. But in 1762, its publication and success lit the fuse: the way in which Rousseau denied original sin earned him condemnation from the Church. Convinced of a form of natural goodness in children, which human society had not yet perverted, Rousseau came to the idea that childhood is an essential moment in existence and that its development obeys general laws on which any good teacher should rely. The first two books of Émile deal with the two initial stages of childhood (from birth to 2 years and from 2 to 12 years), during which pedagogy is, from the outset, a very serious issue. Staging a governor and his young pupil through a theoretical narrative of infinite richness, Rousseau makes us think about the most crucial questions raised by any reflection on childhood. Dossier 1. The sources of Rousseau's educational thought 2. Émile, a compendium of Rousseauist anthropology 3. Pedagogy and childhood in the age of Enlightenment 4. Rousseauist-inspired approaches to childhood. Title : The Confessions - Books I to IV - Jean-Jacques Rousseau - book Summary : I am undertaking an undertaking which has never been preceded and whose execution will have no imitator. I want to show my fellow men a man in all the truth of nature; and that man will be me." In these first four books of his Confessions, Rousseau recounts his youth, from his birth (1712) until the age of 19 (1731). He recounts his difficult childhood in Geneva - he, the son of a modest watchmaker, motherless - and his flight to escape his environment; his travels; finally his providential meeting with Madame de Warens, an older woman with whom he immediately falls in love. It will be for him a new birth, and the entry into adulthood. More than thirty years later, Rousseau looks at Jean-Jacques. He recounts his childhood sorrows, his adolescent joys, confesses his petty thefts ("I was therefore a rascal"), relives his first romantic emotions, and plunges back into his dazzling discovery of reading, which saved him from boredom ("I did not choose: I read everything with equal avidity"). He makes, in in short, the assessment of his apprenticeship in life. In this extraordinary quest for an identity, a true novel of origins, Rousseau tells his story, Rousseau reinvents himself.
