Title : A Delicate Truth - John le Carré - Book

Summary :

2008. The Rock of Gibraltar, the jewel of the British colonies, is the scene of a counterterrorism operation led by a British commando and American mercenaries. Codename: Wildlife. Objective: to kidnap a jihadist arms buyer. Sponsors: an ambitious foreign minister and his personal friend, the head of a private military company. Kit Probyn, a candid diplomat, is summoned to be the politician's hotline. The operation is so delicate that even the minister's private secretary, Toby Bell, is kept out of it.

2011. Kit Probyn, now retired, summons Toby Bell to his Cornish manor. Toby must choose between his conscience and his loyalty as a servant of the state. But if the passivity of honest men is enough to make evil triumph, how can he remain silent?

Of burning topicality – the clash between Christianity and Islam –, Such a delicate truth, The author's twenty-third novel is hard-hitting, tight as a fist. Masterful.

Translated from English (Great Britain) by Isabelle Perrin

John le Carré , born in 1931, studied at the universities of Bern and Oxford, taught at Eton, and worked briefly for British intelligence during the Cold War. For six decades, he devoted himself to writing. He died in 2020 at the age of 89.

Isabelle Perrin , who was destined for a wise academic career, caught the literary translation bug from his mother Mimi. The incurable duettists would co-author more than thirty translations, including all of John le Carré's novels since The Russia House .

Press excerpts:

"John le Carré transcends mere genre literature and will go down in history as perhaps the most important writer of the second half of the 20th century." Ian McEwan

"Le Carré returns to his roots here. Jubilant and subtle, this novel is the most striking of his recent works." The Times

“John le Carré’s best novel! It hits the mark: a gripping story about state cover-ups, individual conscience, and duty to one’s country.” New York Times

" In Such a delicate truth , the tension mounts as the revelations unfold. Le Carré, a fine analyst of the contemporary world, knows how to provoke while giving food for thought. The Independent

“Le Carré’s voice is as recognizable as Dickens’ or Jane Austen’s: often imitated, never equaled, he created his own world of pathetic spies, treacherous lovers, guilt-ridden private school alumni, and ruthless establishment figures as seductive as they are immoral.” Financial Times
