They are two young people from their province. One is from Berry, Henri Fournier, who in 1913, under the pseudonym Alain-Fournier, will sign his first novel Le Grand Meaulnes, a book that has now become a myth. The other is Jacques Rivière. He comes from the Gironde and will become the director of the prestigious Nouvelle Revue française, founded by André Gide, to which he will sacrifice his personal work. They are seventeen years old in 1903. Their friendship was born from a reading of the poet Henri de Régnier, which brought to a peak a shared love of literature and art. They will quickly abandon their studies to roam the bookstores, museums, concert halls, and streets of Paris, "the heart of the world." Their correspondence is a living picture of their personal history and that of the world that surrounds them with the abundant riches that overflowed their era. The letters are grouped by themes that evoke the highlights of their friendship: books, England, Gide, holidays, the war... where Alain-Fournier died on September 22, 1914 at the age of twenty-eight.
