Elena, a young Romanian woman born in Bessarabia and tossed about by history, meets a man at a ball in 1958 with whom she falls passionately in love. He is Jewish, and her parents oppose the marriage. Elena ends up marrying Jacob and realizing her dream: to leave Ceausescu's communist and anti-Semitic Romania. To emigrate to the United States. She becomes American, and calls herself Helen. She has broken with the past, but the future is no longer a dream. Helen is now confronted with a reality that escapes her: the illness and depression of her husband; the independence of this son for whom she has sacrificed everything, and who is marrying a French woman despite his parents' opposition. Helen does not like this selfish, arrogant young woman, imbued with an almost national sense of superiority. Marie fears this mother-in-law, whose silence conceals growing hostility. Yet, between these two women who are complete opposites - their origins, their values and their attachment to the same man - something grows that resembles love.
