On February 28, 1936, soloist Bronislaw Huberman gave a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Of the two violins he had brought, a Stradivarius and a Guarneri, he chose the latter. When he left the stage, the Stradivarius had vanished and would not resurface for many years.
The story of the missing instrument began one winter night in 1706, in a valley in the Italian Alps, when a lumberjack chose the spruce he was going to cut down on that dark January moon. From its creation by master luthier Stradivari to the incredible and true twists and turns that followed the kidnapping, Frédéric Chaudière recounts the eventful existence of a highly coveted violin with the rhythm of a serial novel: for three centuries, in fact, the Stradivarius crystallized and unleashed the passions of artisans, musicians, music lovers, lovers of art, profit, and glory.

Born in Dieulefit in 1963, Frédéric Chaudière has been a luthier in Montpellier since 1986. He regularly contributes to the English magazine The Strad and writes articles on guest soloists' instruments for Radio France programs. His instruments are played worldwide by renowned musicians including J.-J. Kantorow, N. Brainin, R. Ricci, YC Cho, and A. Sitkovetski.
