At the end of 1899, but dated 1900, as if to mark a new century, Die Traumdeutung appeared: it is the book of dreams down to its baroque, abundant composition. A year later, this little book appeared, commissioned by a publisher, and whose purpose is quite different: this time, it is an exposition on dreams and which takes a more classical, sometimes didactic form. As Didier Anzieu indicates in his preface, Die Traumdeutung constituted and still constitutes an initiation into the unconscious. On the dream, it is an introduction to psychoanalysis. It sets out the results acquired by a then completely new science. If the object here is the dream, Freud does not intend to confer exceptional value on it. On the contrary, he frees himself and his reader throughout from a romantic or mystical "overestimation," which would make the dream the place of some ascent of the soul towards the unknown. He therefore focuses his attention primarily on the processes of "dream work," illustrating them with numerous examples and encouraging us to find them at work in other productions of the unconscious.
