When Samana ascetics pass through the city, he follows them, familiarizes himself with all their practices but is unable to find the peace of mind he seeks. Then comes the encounter with Gotama, the Buddha. While recognizing his sublime doctrine, he cannot accept it and begins another life with the beautiful Kamala and the merchant Kamaswani. The riches he acquires transform him into a new, materialistic man, whose character eventually displeases him.
He goes through the forest, to the edge of the river. It is there that the final phase of the cycle of his evolution is accomplished.
