Title : Laughter in the Night - Vladimir Nabokov - Book

Summary :

Here is a novel by Vladimir Nabokov, unpublished in French. Dissatisfied with the English translation of {Chamber of Darkness}, which was the initial version of {Laughter in the Night}, Vladimir Nabokov, exiled in the United States, decided in 1937 to translate it himself. This linguistic challenge resulted in a new and transformed work, with "absolute precision," as obvious as an axiom to cold pessimism: "Once upon a time in Berlin, Germany, there lived a man named Albinus. He was rich, respectable, and happy. One day he abandoned his wife for a young mistress; he loved; he was not loved; and his life ended in catastrophe." Under the guise of a Berlin melodrama, a comedy of manners, a three-way comedy, where one deceives and is deceived, Nabokov plays out the implacable mechanics of his demonstration. Is love blind? Yes, replies the demiurge Nabokov. The variation on adultery then becomes a cruel parody in which Gogol and Tolstoy pass like shadows. The novel expands into a timeless fable, the colors of life fade and soon melt into a {black moonless night}. Yet, in the darkness someone laughs.
