The Lover of Poems IF I suddenly look at my true thought, I cannot console myself for having to endure this interior speech without a person and without origin; these ephemeral figures; and this infinity of enterprises interrupted by their own facility, which transform one into the other, without anything changing with them. Incoherent without appearing so, instantly null as it is spontaneous, thought, by its nature, lacks style. BUT I do not have every day the power to propose to my attention a few necessary beings, nor to feign the spiritual obstacles which would form an appearance of beginning, of fullness and of end, in place of my unbearable flight. A poem is a duration, during which, reader, I breathe a law which was prepared; I give my breath and the machines of my voice; or only their power, which is reconciled with silence. I abandon myself to the adorable allure: to read, to live where the words lead. Their appearance is written. Their concerted sonorities. Their shaking is composed, according to a previous meditation, and they will rush into the resonance in magnificent or pure groups. Even my astonishments are assured: they are hidden in advance, and are part of the number. Moved by the fatal writing, and if the ever-future meter chains my memory without return, I feel each word in all its force, for having waited for it indefinitely. This measure which transports me and which I color, protects me from true and false. Neither doubt divides me, nor reason works on me. No chance, but an extraordinary chance strengthens itself. I find without effort the language of this happiness; and I think by artifice, a thought quite certain, marvelously far-sighted, - with calculated gaps, without involuntary darkness, whose movement commands me and whose quantity fills me: a singularly accomplished thought.
