Since the final vote by Parliament on January 28, 2015, the animal has finally been recognized in the Civil Code as a "living being endowed with sensitivity" (new article 515-14). This is a historic turning point, which puts an end to more than two hundred years of an archaic vision of the animal in the Civil Code. This recognition constitutes immense progress for our society.
There is no need for the law, with its rules so muddled that we no longer know what to do with them, to say such a thing: animals have a feeling. Ordinary people, indifferent to role-playing about great causes that are not, have perceived since the dawn of time the glimmer of friendship reflected in the gaze of the familiar animal, and they have shuddered with regret when they distinguish the incomprehension that the wounded animal can address to man as a final reproach. Legal smokescreen is one of the most prodigious mills of stupidity that the Western world has conceived. It is about making people believe that the law is important in all things, when this is not the case. The happy or less unhappy ending of everything most often escapes the sphere of the law. The law cannot do everything since no regulation can oblige us to have a heart.
