Title : Émile or On Education, Books I-II - Jean-Jacques Rousseau - book
Summary :
Today we see Émile as a revolutionary anticipation of new methods in education. But in 1762, its publication and success lit the fuse: the way in which Rousseau denied original sin earned him condemnation from the Church. Convinced of a form of natural goodness in children, which human society had not yet perverted, Rousseau came to the idea that childhood is an essential moment in existence and that its development obeys general laws on which any good teacher should rely. The first two books of Émile deal with the two initial stages of childhood (from birth to 2 years and from 2 to 12 years), during which pedagogy is, from the outset, a very serious issue. Staging a governor and his young pupil through a theoretical narrative of infinite richness, Rousseau makes us think about the most crucial questions raised by any reflection on childhood. Dossier 1. The sources of Rousseau's educational thought 2. Émile, a compendium of Rousseauist anthropology 3. Pedagogy and childhood in the age of Enlightenment 4. Rousseauist-inspired approaches to childhood.
