Born in 1894 in the impoverished highlands of the Massif Central, young Martial divided his time between the local school and his parents' farm. A lively, persevering child, he learned quickly and, thanks to the support of his godfather, a miller with progressive ideas, he passed the entrance exam to the École Normale, "glory of the Republic and the Department." Thus, he prepared to join the elite of the Nation, the one which, carried by "a secular faith," promised to ensure the education of future generations... But the war of 1914 broke out. Far from learning arithmetic, spelling, and morality, Martial was called to the front where he experienced the horror of the trenches, vowing to fight so that this war would be the last. In vain!
