Summary :
An intergalactic corporation has decided to extract ore from the planet Effem. The natives oppose it: according to them, the planet is "sentient" and must not be harmed. A first envoy from the corporation, Whittaker, has just had an experience in a cavern that seems to prove the natives right. But this time, the corporation dispatches two envoys: Matthew Luzon, charged with restoring order and restarting mining; and Marmion Allgemeine, who is convinced that the planet must be left alone. Each of them sends investigators to the four corners of the planet; they discover the devastation of all kinds committed by the first Earthlings to arrive. It is discovered that the effects of colonization are infinitely more perverse than expected. Effem is too quiet for a sentient planet; little by little, anxiety sets in.
