I wrote this book as one bleeds. Claudine was taken from us a few days before her eighteenth birthday. I thought it was my duty to write to remain in her wake. We were still in her light. We must not let her fade away. Her death would have been too absurd. A year after her tragic disappearance on the road, I began to write, in pain. Day after day, for a year, I kept Claudine's diary. I tried to understand the incomprehensible. I was revolted. I tried to find meaning, with my simple, coal-burner faith. I penetrated nothing of the mystery. It did not seem possible to me that Claudine was not promised to another marriage. Twenty-five years later, I still think so.
