Summary :

Even outside of Sylvie , there is in Nerval an omnipresent infusion of memory, a song of times gone by that soars and unspools from even the most tenuous reminders of the past and of long ago, and which I do not see in any other writer. It is not a quasi-hallucinatory resurrection of the past, as happens in Proust's best moments, sometimes very close to the illusion of false recognition, it is rather, evoked in his prose by some spell, the blind contact that one feels when finding the house and garden of one's childhood again. As if this bygone world were the only place where, instinctively, infallibly, Nerval finds himself , and immediately convinces us of it.

Such a bygone world is what most closely defines the works gathered here, which bring together both the "dreamer in prose" and the poet of Odelettes and Chimères . Les Petits châteaux de Bohême recomposes Nerval's ages; Les Promenades et Souvenirs do not separate the past from the places the writer crossed. As for Les Filles du Feu , it was under the title Amours perdues that he thought for a moment of publishing them. As is often the case with Nerval, these different works do not cease to be a quest.
