Title : Fields of Honor - Jean Rouaud - book
Summary :
They died within a few weeks of each other: first the father, then his old aunt, and finally the maternal grandfather. But this series of deaths seems to have resulted in only one missing person: the narrator, whose emptiness occupies the center of the story. It is on the periphery and from tiny clues (a set of dentures, a few photos, a holy picture) that a story gradually takes shape, which will eventually reach, through successive layers, the horizon of capital History with its Great War, the cradle of all mysteries.
Goncourt Prize in 1990, Fields of Honor is the first part of a novel series which continues with Illustrious men, The World Roughly And For your gifts, and closes with On stage as in heaven.
