Title : The Chairs - Eugène Ionesco - book
Summary :
In this play, Pierrot-Delpech saw, in 1961, "the most accomplished of modern tragedies." Ionesco's third play, created in 1952 and revived in 1956, is now enjoying continued success. The subject of Chairs is, the author tells us, "the ontological void"; but it is also a personal drama, the mirror of a conscience. We find there the nostalgia of childhood, the feeling of guilt, the horror of old age and death. It is still a comedy that, very often, excites laughter with its clowning, its puns, its parodies, its pirouettes. It is a ballet: that of the chairs piled up in the accelerated movement of a fantastic whirlwind, and which remain empty. The old people pretend to receive a crowd of guests, until a single character finally appears on stage: hallucination? theatrical truth? The long-awaited Speaker is deaf and mute, and the stage remains empty, cluttered with chairs.
