He tries to make himself worthy of her, studies, suffers from jealousy because of the handsome German Hans von Schwede, becomes the secretary of Count Bronicki before the family leaves for Poland, where he joins them in June 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War which forces him to return to France. So the separation begins for the very young lovers...
