At the end of the 1970s, Serge Velay, a young philosophy professor with a passion for literature, met Jean Carrière (1928-2005), a decorated novelist who won the Prix Goncourt in 1972 for Maheux's L'Epervier. Nearly three decades of friendship and fruitful complicity followed. The Summer Palace brings together two sets of fragments composed ten years apart (2005 and 2015), in memory of the late writer. This album is, all at once, the modest chronicle of a mourning, a loving portrait of the artist, and a fervent eulogy to literature and music. "I will probably be criticized for the disjointed nature of these pages," writes Serge Velay, "but I didn't want to squeeze my friend into a book like someone puts him in a tomb.
