This volume of fantastic stories, most of which were written between 1882 and 1887, was not composed by Maupassant himself. Reading them in sequence, collected in the order of their publication, one will better understand, however, that the fantastic is a constant in the work - and one that appeared very early on: contrary to what a certain legend has led people to believe, Maupassant, although madness overcame him at the end of his life, did not write from his own dictation.
But is it really fantasy? Nothing supernatural here, nor marvelous. But stories that give way to anguish and cruelty, madness and fear, to the division of being that is analyzed with lucidity. The genius of the author is then to make his reader captive, to act on his conscience and to make him believe naturally and simply that this interior fantasy, coherent and logical, is also ordinary life, but suddenly become strange.
