This forward, gifted with the ball at his feet and also good with his head, began his career with the Girondins de Bordeaux, the club that trained him and brought him into the first team at the age of 17. In 1994 (he was 22), he was called up to the French national team where he reached the 1996 UEFA Cup final with Bixente Lizarazu and Zinédine Zidane. That same year, at the end of a full season, he joined AC Milan. After a brief stint in Spain (FC Barcelona), Olympique de Marseille recruited him in 1997. Thanks to the exploits of the Marseille attack – a Ravanelli-Maurice-Dugarry trio with Pires as playmaker – OM climbed to second place in the league and the UEFA Cup final.
