Title : The Desert of Love - François Mauriac - book
Summary :
Grand Prix for novels from the French Academy 1926
One evening, in a bar, Raymond Courrèges meets Maria Cross by chance, a woman to whom, as a teenager, he showed an ardent and clumsy passion, whom she rejected. In Raymond's memories, which Maria's face brings back to life, we soon discover other shadows, other wounds, such as the ambiguous rivalry of a father and a son for the same woman.
It was at the age of forty that François Mauriac published this novel, a disillusioned observation of the sterility of human passions, a melancholic illustration, in the revelry of Paris in the 1920s, of Pascal's theme of the misery of man without God. "The Desert of Love," he wrote, "is the novel of my renunciation. It could be the title of my entire work."
