"The Tragedy of King Christophe" is a barbaric (in the noble sense of the term) lyrical and necessary work. Affirming that politics is the modern force of destiny and history is lived politics, Aimé Césaire reveals the invention of the future, of a rooted future. Christophe's Haitian adventure evokes the collective destiny of today's African people. The phase of acute revolt has been succeeded by that of re-cognition, of the constitution of an authentic and freely assumed heritage.
This undertaking must be that of a builder, an architect: Aimé Césaire has created a character of great and lofty stature with exceptional vigor and poetic invention. Christophe (whom the actor Douta Seck so powerfully inhabited) is a man of Africa. He is the Muntu, the man who participates in the vital force (the n'golo) and the man of the word (the nommo). The initial text of the play has been the subject of multiple revisions.
The latest version, which Présence Africaine is presenting today (after publishing the initial text) reveals the quality of the collaboration which brought together, at all times, the author Aimé Césaire and the director Jean-Marc Serreau.
