The adventures of the Man in the Flat Cap and the House of Silk were, from one point of view, the most sensational of Holmes's career. Only, at the time, it was impossible for me to relate them for reasons which will become clear to the reader. However, I have always had the desire to write them, in order to complete the Holmesian canon.
This was impossible earlier: the events I am about to describe were too monstrous, too shocking to be printed. They still are today. I am not exaggerating when I say that they could tear at the whole fabric of our society, which, particularly in wartime, is something I cannot risk. When my task is accomplished, assuming I have the strength to carry it out, I will pack up the manuscript and send it to the vaults of Cox and Co., at Charing Cross, where certain other of my private papers are kept. I will give instructions that, for a hundred years, the package must not be opened. It is impossible to imagine what the world will be like then, but perhaps my future readers will be better immune to scandal and corruption than my contemporaries. I pass on to them here a final portrait of Mr. Sherlock Holmes.
