Postmodernity claims to be post-political. In opposition to this new common sense, this book argues for the idea that politics continues to be what it has always been: what holds societies together. These are the fundamental configurations that the studies gathered here explore, from the initial repression of politics by religion to its modern and ultra-modern transformations under the influence of the orientation toward the future and the dynamics of society and history. Measuring this diversity allows us to better appreciate the hidden role it fulfills today. The eclipse of politics is at the heart of the current disorientation of democracies. They will not emerge from it without freeing themselves from the chimera of its transcendence. What we need most to orient ourselves in the midst of this disarray is a renewed understanding of our political condition.
