Title : The Invention of Christ - Genesis of a Religion - Maurice Sachot - book
Summary :
How did a carpenter's son, named Jesus, one day leave the workshop to announce "the imminent coming of the Kingdom of God"? How were many of his listeners able to see the features of the Messiah in the face of this crucified man? By what means did this recognition take shape to establish itself, after three centuries, as the religion of the empire? What processes then allowed the emergence and success of Christianity? For historians and exegetes alike, it seems accepted that, from the beginning, Jesus was Christ, and that Christianity was a religion. However, we must face the facts: Jesus became Christ, and Christianity became religion. The history of Christian origins, always written backward, needs to be completely revisited. By revealing the internal mediations that presided over the formation of the Christian movement and its metamorphoses, this new history provides an explanation of the genesis of Christianity that calls into question our very notion of religion. After teaching patristic languages at the Faculty of Catholic Theology, Maurice Sachot teaches educational sciences at the University of Human Sciences in Strasbourg.
