In 2004, after the death of his wife, Iván, a budding writer and manager of a miserable veterinary practice in Havana, recalls his encounter in 1977 with a mysterious man who was walking on the beach with two borzoi greyhounds. After a few conversations, the "man who loved dogs" confides in him about Trotsky's assassin, Ramón Mercader, whom he seems to know intimately. Through these confidences, Iván reconstructs the trajectories of Lev Davidovich Bronstein, also known as Trotsky, and Ramón Mercader, also known as Jacques Mornard, and how they became victim and executioner of one of the most revealing crimes of the 20th century. He follows these two itineraries, starting from the exile of one and the childhood of the other, and their meeting in Mexico City. These two stories take on their full meaning when the Cuban projects his private and intellectual adventures into contemporary Cuba.
