Sentimental Education, The Story of a Young Man is a novel written by Gustave Flaubert and published in 1869. The heart of the story is taken from Sainte-Beuve's novel: Volupté, which Honoré de Balzac had already treated and in a way rewritten with The Lily of the Valley. Flaubert's novel takes up the same subject according to entirely new narrative rules, reinventing the coming-of-age novel to give it a depth and acuity never before achieved. Sentimental Education includes many autobiographical elements, such as the meeting of Madame Arnoux, inspired by Flaubert's meeting with Élisa Schlésinger, the love of his life. The main character is Frédéric Moreau, a young provincial of eighteen who comes to study in Paris. From 1840 to 1867, he experienced unwavering friendship and the power of stupidity, art, politics, and the revolutions of a world hesitating between monarchy, republic, and empire. Several women (Rosanette, Madame Dambreuse) crossed his life, but none could compare to Marie Arnoux, wife of a wealthy art dealer, with whom he was madly in love. It was through contact with this inactive passion and the contingencies of the world that he received his sentimental education, which essentially boiled down to gradually burning his illusions. Less well-known than Madame Bovary, Sentimental Education is, however, a complete novel with a fully mastered style, and where the meticulously constructed world is one he knew from experience. The fresco thus created is both a summary of Romanticism and a precise picture of an era, making Flaubert the spiritual initiator of naturalism. Maupassant and Émile Zola would consider him their master.
